Written and premiered during Olivier Messiaen’s imprisonment at the Stalag V III A, a prisoner-of-war camp in Görlitz, this transcendental work was first performed by fellow prisoners, Henri Akoka, Jean Le Boulaire and Etienne Pasquier along with Messiaen himself at the piano. This quartet was premiered outdoors and in the rain on dilapidated instruments on 15th January, 1941 to an audience of 400 fellow prisoners. Messiaen later recalled: “Never was I listened to with such rapt attention and comprehension.”
